Complexity: Syd Bauman is the Senior XML Programmer/Analyst at the Women Writers Project — one of the oldest extant TEI projects — but if he were to be allowed to choose his own title it would likely be “XML data hygienist”. To say that he is obsessed with data consistency would be an exaggeration … but not much of one. Since a schema is the first line of defense against inconsistency, Syd thinks about schemas in general, and the TEI schema in particular, a lot, and about how schemas support expressivity, interchange, and interoperability.
Date format: Syd Bauman served as the North American Editor of the TEI from 2001 to 2007, and has served as an active member of the TEI Technical Council since 2013. He began working for a text encoding project — the Women Writers Project, one of the oldest TEI projects still running — in 1990, and has been involved with and invested in the TEI since 1991. One of the many things he learned from and appreciated about TEI P 1.1 was its use of the ISO standard date format that by now we all know and love: a four-digit year, a hyphen, a two-digit month, a hyphen, and a two-digit day.
